Doublet is a modern and very fashionable design that was invented in order to make stones such as lapis lazuli, turquoise and other non-transparent stones glow and create unique colors from them. There is the unification of two gemstones, which usually consists of quartz and another non transparent stone. Quartz in this case gives radiance to the other stone and also volume. Due to its composition doublet jewelry needs to be looked after. To keep them in good shape you need to avoid contact with chemicals, such as soap or perfumes. At the end of the Middle Ages, lapis lazuli began to be exported to Europe, where it was ground into powder and made into ultramarine, the finest and most expensive of all blue pigments. It was used by some of the most important artists of the Renaissance and Baroque, including Masaccio and Vermeer. It still continues to be popular today, and remains one of the most important opaque gemstones.

According to Pausanias it was introduced by Heracles as a prize for the running race winner to honour his father Zeus. In the ancient Olympic Games there were no gold, silver, or bronze medals. There was only one winner per event, crowned with an olive wreath made of wild-olive leaves from a sacred tree near the temple of Zeus at Olympia. Olive wreaths were given out during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens in honor of the ancient tradition, because the games were being held in Greece.
