History
The Vergina Sun also known as the “Star of Vergina”, or “Macedonian Star” is a rayed solar symbol appearing in ancient Greek art. The Vergina Sun proper has sixteen triangular rays. The name “Vergina Sun” became widely used after the archaeological excavations in and around the small town of Vergina, in northern Greece, during the late 1970s. In older references, the name “Argead Star” or “Star of the Argeadai” is used for the Sun as the royal symbol of the dynasty of Macedon. There it was depicted on a golden larnax found in a 4th-century BC royal tomb belonging to either Philip II or Philip III of Macedon, the father and half-brother of Alexander the Great, respectively.

Medusa, in Greek mythology, the most famous of the monster figures known as Gorgons, is generally described as a winged female with living venomous snakes in place of hair; unlike the Gorgons, she was sometimes represented as very beautiful. According to Hesiod and Aeschylus, she lived and died on an island named Sarpedon, somewhere near Cisthene. Medusa was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who thereafter used her head, which retained its ability to turn onlookers to stone, as a weapon until he gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. according to another account; Perseus buried it in the marketplace of Argos. The Labyrinth in ancient Greece was an elaborate, confusing structure designed and built by the legendary artificer Daedalus for King Minos of Crete at Knossos. Its function was to hold the Minotaur. the Minotaur is a mythical creature portrayed in Classical times with the head of a bull and the body of a man. The Minotaur was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus.

Ιστορία
Το μενταγιόν με τη μέλισσα των Μαλίων ανακαλύφθηκε στο Χρυσόλακκο, του μινωικού παλατιού των Μαλίων στο νησί της Κρήτης, και πιστεύεται ότι χρονολογείται γύρω στο 1800 π.Χ.. Το όνομα Χρυσόλακκος σημαίνει “λάκκος του χρυσού” λόγω των πολύτιμων αντικειμένων που συνήθιζαν να βρίσκουν εκεί οι γεωργοί. Το Μινωικό Ανάκτορο βρίσκεται 3 χλμ. ανατολικά της πόλης των Μαλίων και είναι το τρίτο σημαντικότερο γνωστό μινωικό ανάκτορο μετά την Κνωσό και τη Φαιστό. Αυτό το μενταγιόν έχει το σχήμα δύο μελισσών ή σφηκών, που αποθηκεύουν μια σταγόνα μέλι σε μια κηρήθρα και είναι ένα από τα πιο διάσημα εκθέματα του Μουσείου Ηρακλείου.

Το μενταγιόν των μινωικών μελισσών, ένα από τα πιο διάσημα μινωικά έργα τέχνης, ανακαλύφθηκε στο νεκροταφείο του Παλαιού Ανακτόρου στο Χρυσόλακκο, έξω από το ανάκτορο των Μαλίων, το τρίτο μεγαλύτερο και σημαντικότερο γνωστό μινωικό ανάκτορο μετά την Κνωσσό και τη Φαιστό. Χρυσόλακκος σημαίνει “Λάκκος του χρυσού” λόγω των πολλών πολύτιμων αντικειμένων που βρέθηκαν εκεί. Το διάσημο μενταγιόν χρονολογείται από την Εποχή του Χαλκού, (1800 π.Χ.) και είναι μια εκπληκτική, πολύ λεπτομερής αναπαράσταση δύο μελισσών ή σφηκών που αποθηκεύουν μια σταγόνα μέλι στην κηρήθρα τους. Αυτό το μενταγιόν είναι ένα από τα πιο διάσημα εκθέματα στο θαυμαστό αρχαιολογικό μουσείο του Ηρακλείου.

Υπήρξε το αποτέλεσμα της συνεργασίας σημαντικών αρχιτεκτόνων και γλυπτών στα μέσα του 5ου π.Χ. αιώνα. Οι αρχιτέκτονες του Παρθενώνα ήταν ο Ικτίνος και ο Καλλικράτης. Ο Παρθενώνας αποτελεί το λαμπρότερο μνημείο της Αθηναϊκής πολιτείας.

Ο Ήλιος της Βεργίνας, γνωστός και ως «Αστέρι της Βεργίνας» είναι ένα ηλιακό σύμβολο με ακτίνες που εμφανίζεται στην αρχαία ελληνική τέχνη. Έχει δεκαέξι τριγωνικές ακτίνες. Το όνομα «Ήλιος της Βεργίνας» χρησιμοποιήθηκε ευρέως μετά τις αρχαιολογικές ανασκαφές στη μικρή πόλη της Βεργίνας και στη γύρω περιοχή, στη βόρεια Ελλάδα, στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1970.

Μενταγιόν Κράνος του Λεωνίδα – Ασήμι 925
Κατασκευασμένο από ασήμι 925.
Αυτό το μενταγιόν αντιπροσωπεύει το κράνος του Λεωνίδα.
Ο Λεωνίδας ήταν πολεμιστής βασιλιάς της ελληνικής πόλης-κράτος της Σπάρτης. Αναμφισβήτητα, ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους ήρωες στην ιστορία της αρχαίας Ελλάδας. Το 480 π.Χ. ο Λεωνίδας ηγήθηκε ενός στρατού 6.000 έως 7.000 Ελλήνων από πολλές πόλεις-κράτη, συμπεριλαμβανομένων 300 Σπαρτιατών, οι οποίοι πολέμησαν τον περσικό στρατό που εισέβαλε από το πέρασμα των Θερμοπυλών. Ο Λεωνίδας της Σπάρτης έκλεισε τον μοναδικό δρόμο από τον οποίο μπορούσε να περάσει ο τεράστιος στρατός του Ξέρξη. Οι Πέρσες κατάφεραν να νικήσουν τους Έλληνες αλλά υπέστησαν μεγάλες απώλειες. Ένας ντόπιος κάτοικος ονόματι Εφιάλτης οδήγησε τον Πέρση στρατηγό από μια ορεινή πλαγιά στο πίσω μέρος των Ελλήνων. Ο βασιλιάς Λεωνίδας απέστειλε όλα τα ελληνικά στρατεύματα και έμεινε πίσω με 300 Σπαρτιάτες, 400 Θηβαίους και 700 Θεσπιείς εθελοντές που αρνήθηκαν να φύγουν. Σκοτώθηκαν όλοι στο πεδίο της μάχης, προστατεύοντας την πατρίδα τους.

Κατασκευασμένο από επιχρυσωμένο ασήμι 925.
Στην ελληνική μυθολογία, μια μικρή κουκουβάγια παραδοσιακά αντιπροσωπεύει ή συνοδεύει την Αθηνά, Θεά της σοφίας. Λόγω αυτής της συσχέτισης, το πουλί – που συχνά αναφέρεται ως «κουκουβάγια της Αθηνάς» έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί ως σύμβολο γνώσης, σοφίας, οξυδέρκειας και ευρυμάθειας.

On the reverse side is the inscription “μολών λαβέ” which means “come to get”. This phrase was the answer to Xerxes when he asked him to hand over the arms of the defending Greeks to the Thermopylae. Leonidas was a warrior king of the Greek city-state of Sparta. Arguably, one of the greatest heroes in the history of ancient Greece. In 480 B.C Leonidas led an army of 6,000 to 7,000 Greeks from many city-states, including 300 Spartans, fought the invading Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae. Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes could pass. The Persians succeeded in defeating the Greeks but sustained heavy losses. A local resident named Ephialtes led the Persian general by a mountain track to the rear of the Greeks. King Leonidas sent away all the Greek troops and stayed behind with 300 Spartans, 400 Thebans, and 700 Thespian volunteers who refused to leave. They were all killed in the battlefield, protecting their homeland.
